The development of sheet piling and the Warrington-Vulcan hammers was about the same time (along with concrete piles, other types of steel piles, and the Engineering News Formula.) The years leading up to World War I were ones of rapid development in the marine construction and deep foundation industries, and Vulcan was in the middle of it all.
This part of the website is to look at these developments, both from the standpoint of sheet piling itself (its types and design) and its construction.

- Vulcan Pile Extractors, and the Wood Pile Puller. Sheet piling wasn’t the only reason Vulcan developed these machines, but it was one of the most important.

Vulcan 50C, driving sheet piling. Vulcan hammers weren’t known to be sheet pile specialists but, as these photos show, they got the job done anyway. As was the case before, an “offshore” type leader was used, where a stub leader was hung from a crane and lowered with the hammer. This is good when the pile is supported at the ground, either by a template or in this case other sheet piles. A Vulcan differential acting hammer driving sheet piling using the staggered procedure, i.e., driving alternating sheeting and then coming back and driving those skipped. Note the use of stub leaders. Merritt-Chapman-Scott was the contractor. DGH-900 driving sheet piles.
