The Vulcan Drawing Cabinet

In its early years and down to about World War II, Vulcan was very much a “vertically integrated” company, including its own foundry and blacksmith for forgings. Sometimes that extended to the furniture itself, and above is a drawing of cabinets for drawings, probably with enough detail for you to build one yourself.

Vulcan got into CAD when the fullness of time came, but in the interim many of its drawings lived in cabinets such as these. This website is well stocked with images of these drawings, from the ink drawings from Chicago to the pencil (regular graphite and grease) drawings in Chattanooga. But there’s always the occasion to use a large paper drawing, and such cabinets–“store bought” in later years–still store Vulcan’s engineering knowledge base.
